Jan Heylen impressive in the Astromega seat at the Hockenheim test.
Tony Schmidt signed a contract for the 2003 season with Astromega.
Astromega tested Brazilian Alexander Sperafico and Tony Schmidt in Hockenheim. Tony signed in Hockenheim with Astromega for the 2003 season. But it was the third driver invited by the team who made a big impact. Belgian Jan Heylen made his debut in F3000 with the team, a debut nobody will forget soon.
Jan was impressive, not only his personality, his charisma and professionalism but also his good notice of English, witch is necessary in motorsports. The team integrated him immediately.
Mikke Van Hool: After two laps i needed no more information, we want Jan in the team for next year, said team principal Mikke Van Hool.
Jan discovered the German track under difficult circumstances, not only the bad weather and the slippery track, but also it was busy on the circuit. Some Formula three cars and even little Formula Konig cars where on the track during the test. His first laps out where on a wet track.
Mikke Van Hool: Unbelievable such car control. Jan was after five laps only a second shy from the fastest lap of Tony.
Jan Heylen: I had a small problem with the breaks, said Jan. But an F3000 is impressive it’s like a dream. The team worked perfect for me and I would sign an contract for two years today if I could instead of driving first one year Formula three. But I have to find a budget first.
Mikke Van Hool: Yes, i want Jan in the team next year. I hope that some Belgian investors will help Jan to find the money he needs to drive for us next year. Jan is a rising star in motorsport, someone we need in Belgium for sure.
