FIA F3000 Championship Estoril Test 13-14 February 2002

In yesterday’s morning session, Tomas Enge set a time which was not to be bettered throughout the day, giving him a 0.3 second lead over his nearest rival.

Rookie, Bjorn Wirdheim, in his first outing in the car, took over for the afternoon and set the second fastest time for that session. This left him placed 5th overall at the end of the first day.

The second day saw the drivers switch sessions and the morning saw Bjorn set out to better his previous lap time, this he did in spectacular fashion. The young Swede’s time of 1m 28.210 stood for nearly the entire day only being bettered by Tomas in the dying minutes of the test. Tomas’s time of 1m 28.121 concluded an outstanding test for the Arden team leaving them 1st and 2nd overall, in the face of tough competition.

With the first round of the Championship only six weeks away both drivers acquitted themselves superbly and the Team look forward to more testing time at Barcelona next week.

Christian Horner (Team Manager) commented “The preparations for this years Championship have so far gone to plan and Tomas just got on with the programme. He is getting comfortable and can see the potential. There is more to come. The most impressive performance however has to be that of Bjorn, with his lack of F3000 experience, to set such a pace is incredible. We now look forward to what I am sure will be a successful season”
