International F3000 Championship 2002, A1-Ring.
5th position and 2 points for Red Bull Junior Patrick Friesacher in his home race! "I've finally finished a race on the A1-Ring - and I even made
points!" Team mate Mauricio 15th after pit stop.
Winner: Enge (CZE) in front of Wirdheim and Haberfeld (BRA)!
The A1-Ring in Spielberg showed its best side this afternoon during the 4th race of the international Formula 3000 Championship:
Under summer like weather conditions, 30.000 spectators came to see a very exciting race - and watched local hero Patrick Friesacher get points for the second time in this season. The race could have again been over in the first lap for him though, when Ricardo Mauricio made a mistake and slightly touched his team mate. The Brazilian lost his front wing and had to go back to the
garage, thus falling back a lot.
Friesacher still was able to position himself on 6th place after the start and up from the 10th lap he had to fight hard to stay in front of Italian Enrico Toccacelo who tried to overtake the Austrian again and again - without success, since Friesacher was able to keep Toccacelo at distance. Saelens then dropped out, which meant 5th position for Friesacher!
Patrick F.: "After all, I am happy that I made points, especially here at my home race. It was not a perfect race, but it was extremely exhausting, especially since I continuously had to fight back Toccacelo's attacks. A couple of times it was really close! I am therefore happy with my 5th position - especially after my training result!"
Team mate Ricardo Mauricio fell back a lot after his mistake and consequently was rather disappointed after the race: "For my feeling, Patrick was a little bit too early on the brakes - but somehow I am glad nothing else happened, but this mistake, of course, meant that the race was more or less over for me!"
Tomas Enge (CZE) won in front of his team mate Björn Wirdheim (SWE) and
Mario Haberfeld (BRA). Enge also took the lead in the overall ranking.
