San Marino Grand Prix, Imola – 11th –12th April 2001
Europe is the destination for Round 2 of the Formula 3000 Championship, which runs alongside the F1 calendar for the next eleven rounds of the Formula One World Series.
Circuit Autodromo Enzo e Dino
Ferrari.
The 3.065 mile / 4.933 km circuit, like Interlagos, is a power circuit. It is very heavy on braking because of all the slow chicanes and it requires good braking stability for the down hill section braking into Rivazza. Due to the slow speed corners the down force level is relatively high. The circuit is very demanding on the drivers, with its varying characteristics and its up-and down hill sections requires a good mechanical set-up, which is vital for a fast lap.
Justin Keen – Driver KJR/Monaco
Motorsport
"Imola is another new circuit for me, but as usual I am really looking forward to the challenge. In a way it is good because you approach it with a fresh mind. Again I have not had the opportunity to carry out any testing but I enjoyed my experience in the car in Brazil. By the end of the race I had really got the feel of the car and I felt that I had learnt a great deal. The objective now is to use that knowledge and put it to use in Imola."
Qualifying
Qualifying Position 23rdA disappointing qualifying session. Justin and the team struggled with the car set-up throughout both 45-minute qualifying sessions. Once they had achieved a balance they were happy with they failed to capitalise on new tyres during the session. However Justin was happy overall with the balance of the car on old tyres and was confident going into the race.
Race San Marino, Imola – Saturday 14th April 2001
Position after 35 laps - 12thJustin made a spectacular start and climbed seven places at the start of the race to run in 16th position. He then settled down and continued a strong run gradually making his way through the field. By mid race distance he was lapping as quickly as the race leaders maintaining a 14th place position. Justin was picking up speed with each new lap and getting quicker towards the end of the race. The British driver would have been in line for a 9th place finish had it not been for an incident at the second but last chicane that put him back to 12th.
For the KJR/Monaco team it was their best result ever in International F3000. This result was a clear indication of the potential of the package they have in the car and the driver for 2001.
