 The track

The Brazilian GP has been raced on this circuit since 1990 close to San Paolo: this is the half version of the original one, 8 km long, on which cats used to race until 1980. Interlagos is considered one of the most demanding track of the Championship ‘cause of its long series of  bends (large and fast in the first part of the track, grasp and winding in the second section), ‘cause of its ups-and-down and, last but not least, because of the bloody hot, typical of this Brazilian race. F.1 drivers finish this GP very tired quite often. A particular attention must be paid to the WEATHER: the weather conditions, in fact, can change suddenly, running the risk of torrential and unexpected rain even during a sunny day.

 The Team

Team Durango Benetton Junior prepares for the season 2001…

After one year of absence from the FIA F.3000 pit-lane, the Venetian team, owned by the two friends Ivone Pinton and Enrico Magro, is ready to come back to the prestigious Series.

The young Jaime Melo Jnr (Brazil, 20 years old, 2000: FIA F.3000 International Champ. – 14th) will be the team mate of Italian Gabriele Lancieri (Italy, 26 years old, 2000: F.3000 Italia Champ.-3rd) and both will be racing “at home”: Melo this weekend at the opening race and Lancieri immediately afterwards at Imola, on 14th April.

Lancieri’s debut in the International Series has been possible thanks to IVONE PINTON and the ex-F.1 driver PIERLUIGI MARTINI.

Since its foundation, in fact, one of the goals of team Durango has always been to provide the opportunity for young drivers to realise their full potential and the chance to gain experience.

One of the main objectives of Durango Benetton Junior Team is to reach important and gratifying sporting results fighting for the first positions. Team Durango has a full organisation of people: from engineers, mechanics, finishing with a Press office, the Advertising and Publishing office.

A few words from our driver...

JAIME  MELO (n° 30)

I: This is your second year of experience in the International F.3000 Championship. What are your expectations?

J.M: “I think that this year will be very important for me. Last year I tried to gain more experience I could. In 2001 I want to win all the races I can!! Especially this first race , in Brazil. If I get a good position on the starting grid, I think my team and me can fight for the podium.”

I: Last year you were the team mate of Bruno Junqueira who won the F.3000 championship.  At the start of this year we won’t see names such as: Junqueira, Minassian and Heidfeld. Who do you think will be their substitute?

J.M: “Webber, I think. But there are many drivers that  I can fight with for the Championship , but it’s too early to say so now! In any case it will not be an easy championship because it’s very-very competitive!! I think we will have more than one occasion to win.”

I: At Imola test you were the fastest on the 1st  day and second fastest on the 2nd day. How do you feel about your car?

J.M: “I fell well my car!! Technically is good, but we have to work a little again to improve it. My team is a great team, there is a good potential to do well. After Imola one of our intentions was to improve my car, but the weather was too bad: 5°C and a freezing cold (along with the rain!). We are not used to test in England and we weren’t prepared for such a cold temperature! It would have been useless to look for the best lap time: we won’t see the same weather conditions during the championship. So we decided not to look for the performance and to make only few laps also because the car has had to be sent directly from Silvertone  to Brazil.”

I: Interlagos is your “home race”. When did you last race here?

J.M: “In 1999 in F.3 Sudam, I won. Interlagos is a very technical track; there is a series of different and fast curves. It’s absolutely necessary to enter well in any curve and work to set up a balanced car. I like this circuit very much, I did a lot of races here and so I would like to exploit as much as I can the experience I got here.”

 The Championship

 The scoring system

There are a lot of similar aspects to F.1: it’s a Championship organized, manage and owned by the FIA, the races are on the same circuit, during the same weekend; the aerodynamic aspect, the professionalism and the capacity that the drivers must have to feel and set up their car are very close to the F1 world.

1° Position             -     1st place     10 points
2° Position
             -     2nd place      6 points

 The race calendar

The International FIA F.3000 Championship moves closer and closer to F.1 and starts to become a Junior F.1. There are some important and interesting NEWS in the 2001 season, such as the extra-continental race in BRAZIL, at Interlagos, and the race of MONZA, one of  the most famous and  historic track in the world. They represent respectively the 1st and the last race in calendar.
